Oral History Made Easy 2025

By the end of this 2 hour workshop for postgraduate students, participants will have: (i) Acquired an introductory working knowledge on the principles and practices which inform using oral history as a research method for doctoral candidates and graduate/masters level students. (ii) Explored the beliefs and values which shape our engagement with oral history as part of an evolving PhD or masters research methodology. (iii) Discovered how oral history as a research method is defined, how it may be used and its relationship with existing scholarship relevant PhD and masters level study. (iv) Learnt more about ethics, informed consent and working with participants. (vi) Acquired knowledge about the golden rules of interviewing: working with participants; active listening; open questions; framework for best practice; preparation and equipment. (vi) Explored how next steps in using oral history as part of ongoing PhD or masters thesis research development. This workshop was designed and delivered by Dr Angela Maye-Banbury for the White Rose Social Sciences Doctoral Programme UK PhD programme in the UK White Rose Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership (WRDTP). The WRDTP is a prestigious research-training collaboration funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and partner universities in the Yorkshire and Humber and the North West of England. The workshop is now being made available to students from all over the world so they may benefit from this high level specialist guidance.
